Dark Mode Inspiration

April 29, 2021 at 12:55 pm

I’m digging in and giving the site little revamps in a few places. Better type, better responsive handling, cleanup some code. In looking to add a dark mode, I ran across this example by Max Böck who dialed the idea to eleven with a color theme switcher featuring ten options. I don’t think I’m going to do ten but three or four might be nice.

Simple, straightforward, nothing more, and nothing less. Color inspiration from nature photos. Most of the palettes might be too monochromatic for applied use, but they are a great starting point for ideas. Plus, taking a scroll can be pretty relaxing as the imagery and presentation is calming.

Maybe it’s time for some design stuff on this “design” blog. Here’s some simple — dare I say proven — color combinations from Braun products designed by legendary minimalist Dieter Rams.

I always like fun, single-task tools that make inspiration easy. How about color palettes just by clicking the spacebar? Coolors.co let’s you do just that. Like a color and want to lock it in? Click on it, then keep hitting spacebar to build a palette around that color. You can also paste in your own hexadecimal values if you already have a color you want to start with. Palettes are easy to share because the URL has all the values in it. Just copy and paste. Here’s one I created earlier.

Oh, and it’s responsive too. Definitely give it a try on your mobile device.

Pokémon Color Palettes

Reddit user need12648430 wrote a script to breakdown the colors used in making the colorful pocket monsters called Pokémon. Most of the color palettes are great inspiration as they show color theory concepts like complementary and analogous schemes. It’s also great to see how much variation and and complexity goes into something as simple as 8‑bit characters.

And yes, I know I’m showing off some of my geekness with this post. What would be even more geeky is if I were to disclose that I have a collection of Pokémon trading cards that I gathered in my teenage years safely tucked away. IF I were to disclose that. AND IF that were true…
